  • On This Thanksgiving Day...

Let's remember all we have to be thankful for!

Here's the devo from Proverbs 31 Ministries that I got in my email today:

    My Thanksgiving

    Rachel Olsen

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NASB)

    Devotion:

This morning I will wake up thankful. Not because my life is perfect and I have everything I want or need, but because I’m taking the time to count my blessings and give thanks to God.

¨ I’ll be thankful that my husband and I are off work today, and that we have work to return to.

¨ I’ll be thankful that my children are able to enjoy a day of play at home, and thankful they have days of learning ahead that will help shape them into who God intends them to be.

As I pass my desk on the way to my kitchen, I’ll open my Bible that sits on a shelf.

¨ I’ll be thankful for the Word of God that I am able to freely read, distribute, and teach in this country.

I’ll put on my “Through All Generations” CD. It’s an album of hymns recorded by my friend Gwen Smith.

¨ I’ll be thankful for the various friends in my life – both far and near – who enrich me, challenge me, listen to me, pray for me, and make me laugh. I’ll be especially grateful for God’s friendship.

¨ I’ll also be thankful for music and its ability to lift my mood, touch my heart, energize my body, and connect my soul to an eternal God.

I’ll turn on my Christmas tree lights – I like to have my tree up by Thanksgiving Day. The lights and ornaments will twinkle amidst the backdrop of an evergreen tree.

¨ I’ll thank God for giving us trees that stay green all year long despite the cold weather.

¨ I will thank Him for giving us the day and the night, and the stars that twinkle in the sky. I will also be grateful for the Light of the World and the eternal life that He brings, represented by the evergreens in our holiday decorations.

Soon it will be time to start cooking the Thanksgiving meal. In my home that will be turkey, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green beans, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy. Oh, and deviled eggs.

¨ I’ll be thankful for God’s provision of food – thankful for the farmers and ranchers, and for a kind family member who gives us a turkey and a box of sweet potatoes every year.

¨ I’ll remember contributing to a local church’s Thanksgiving ministry for those less fortunate, and I’ll be thankful for the people who act as the hands and feet of Christ in ministry – they inspire me.

As I cook, I’ll set aside cans, plastic bags and cardboard boxes to put into our recycling bin.

¨ I’ll be thankful for this beautiful planet teeming with life and flowing with water that God entrusted to humankind to steward. I’ll look forward to the day when I, like the writer of the book of Revelation, see a new earth recreated by God, free of Satan’s influence.

More family members will join us and we’ll gather around my kitchen table to eat. We are no Norman Rockwell painting - our family has its struggles and issues just like the next family. But on this evening, we will set aside any differences as we laugh, talk, pray, and eat together.

¨ I’ll be thankful for the bond of family – that there are people who know you fully, and love you anyway. And I’ll be grateful for the family of God to which I am bonded through Christ.

After dinner we’ll play cards or board games, or perhaps watch a movie. Then I’ll say goodbye to our guests, tuck my children in bed, sit and reflect on the day. I will ask God to show me any blessings I missed or failed to count, because I’m convinced we all have more to be thankful for than we ever notice. Today, let’s purpose to notice, and to be grateful.

Dear Lord, thank You for the blessings You have bestowed – help me notice them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

  • WHIRLWIND

That is how August has felt...constantly moving.  My house looks like it has been hit by a tornado and I can't seem to get much done unless it is absolutely necessary.  The good news is, I'm enjoying all the activity that has filled August so full.

Grace, Evan, my brother, and I took on the 13 hour drive to SD to visit my grandparents and celebrate their 60th wedding anniversay with them.  Can you imagine being married to someone for 60 years??  Wow!  It was really great that we went.  When we got there we found out my grandparents had just sold their house and will be moving this fall to a larger city 1.5 hours away to live in a retirement community.  We are all really happy about this news for them and feel better knowing they will not be living on a lake in the middle of nowhere.  It is also sad b/c it was our last time at that lake.  We have been going there as an extended family every summer for as long as I can remember.  We did boating, fireworks, fires with smores, tubing, skiing, swimming, fishing, playing in the sand, moped riding, camping, Uno playing, laughing, and more every summer of my childhood at this lake.  The chapter of that part of my life is done.  Sad.  I just want to cling to my memories and knowing it is done makes them even more precious.

And the biggest change has been starting preschool and working a little again.  Grace and Evan are adjusting pretty well to the change.  I am really enjoying being back in a classroom again.  We had our open house today and I got to meet children and families.  We've been setting up the room and I've been attending trainings and meetings and planning.  It's good.  It will be even better once we're into the new routine.

Hmmm, lots on my mind, but I've got a few more things to get done before bed so I better run.  ~G

  • Possum Update

2nd UPDATE:  We caught a 3rd possum and put the trap away for now.  :)

UPDATE:  We caught a 2nd possum and did away with it ourselves.  If you want to know how, just ask Andy.  Let's hope they're gone!!

We caught the possum!  And a guy came and got it this morning.  We're gonna keep the trap out for a while in case there are more.  It was a little one and I learned a lot about possums that I never knew before.  They leave their mothers at a very small size and this one was still probably too young to have a mate.  So the chances are good that it is a loner.  But they euthanize the possums that are caught which is a little sad.  And if you are going to set traps make sure you get a permit from the DNR.  Let's hope our possum troubles are over.

Even more exciting, Grace celebrated her 2nd birthday with some friends and family and a party at the p. farm.  It was a blast!!  Here are a few of my favorite pics from that.  I can't believe she's 2!  She is around the 70th percentile in her weight and height.  She is an amazing girl and I just love being her mom.  There are more and more challenges lately with the whole 2-ish-ness.  I need to start praying up for the teenage years.  (hehe)  I just feel blessed!

Walking hand-in-hand with her cousins...so cute!

  • Summer Eats

This summer I've tried to cook simple, healthy recipes that don't use the oven too often.  I'm sure many of you out there try to do the same.  Anyways, I love talkin' food so here are some of my favorites this summer.

Paninis on the George Foreman Grill

-We've done several combos of meats and cheeses, one of my favorites is turkey with blue cheese

    Salads

-Italian style salad with lots of veges and turkey pepperoni for protein

-Mexican style with black beans for protein and a lime vinegarette

-Tuna salad made with yogurt instead of mayo served on a whole grain pitta

Also, here is a recipe that someone made me after Evan was born.  Since then, I've made it a lot.  It is so fast and yummy.  Grace loves it too!  I just use the reduced fat version of Alfredo sauce in a jar to try to make it a little healthier.

    Cheesy Ham Tortellini

I'm always looking for new recipes.  Give me some of yours!  :) G

  • A Few Pics

For some family out of town (Gigi, Grandapa G, E) I thought I'd post a few new pictures for viewing pleasure.

Evan had his first cereal.  He was not sure what to do with it at first.  But he did enjoy it!

In other news, Evan has thrush again!!! UGGHHH!!!  We're back on some medicine for that.

We had a free sale this morning at our house and raised over $200 for the children's ministry fund at church.  It was all thanks to the people who donated items and the girls who helped me with the sale.  Thanks everyone!!  ~G

  • Night Intruder

So Andy and I were enjoying a nice fire outside one evening and stargazing when we heard some rustling in the bushes and leaves nearby.  Andy jumped to turn on the light and right there was a possum climbing up our wisteria.  If you know Andy and his lack of love for all things animal, you know that we had to pack it in and call it a night.  The next night I was out there with my friend Ruth chatting away and same thing.  Here comes our new pet the possum.  Anyways, I'm kinda nervous to go outside now, especially in the dark.  What are we supposed to do?  Set a trap?  I guess we have to figure that out.

Anyone else bummed about the economy lately?  Here is a nice article I read about healthy foods that don't cost an arm and a leg.

We had Evan's Dedication towards the end of June.  This is my favorite picture from that.  Enjoy!  ~G

  • Night Owl Story

We had one week full of severe weather not too long ago.  Growing up in the midwest, tornado and t-storm watches don't phase me too much.  It was about 9:30 and I went to the grocery store to do my "big trip" where I shop for 2 weeks worth of meals.  Andy was home with both kids in bed for the night.  I was about half way through when a surprising announcement was made over the intercom system.  The tornado watch was upgraded into a tornado warning and they gave us 5 minutes to check out or else we could go to the store freezer.  Being half way through, I did not want to have to start all the way over again another night so I decide to head for the freezer.  It was me and 1 worker, and 4 other girls shivering in safety.  I call home and Andy has both kids down in the crawl space.  Poor Andy and poor kids.  Luckily, Evan kept sleeping through it all but Grace was saying things like rain, dark, and mommy.  It was some of the worst rain and thunder I ever remember hearing.  They kept extending the warning and the store manager said the radio even claimed a tornado touched down in Savoy (which I never heard again so I don't think it happened).  Well, by the time they let us out of the freezer, my cart had been emptied by store workers and it was about 10:30.  I was too tired to start all the way over again.  I headed home with milk and decided tomorrow night I'd have to use my night owl hours for grocery shopping, again.  I don't think I'll ever forget that and I'm sure Andy won't either.  ;)  G

  • Night Owl

I have to be one to get anything done.  It is totally different with two.  If I want to clean, do laundry, pay bills, read, exercise, anything then I have to do it after the little ones are in bed.  I am officially becoming a night owl.

I went out with a friend the other night after bedtime to this new cupcake place downtown.  So cute!  Very fun!  Just what I needed...sweets and girl time.  It is open 'til 11 most nights so if you want to go, just let me know.  ;)

At my mom's group we were randomly talking about having our children learn scripture and here are two sites I cam across when I was searching for helps.  Maybe you can use them too!  ~G

  • 4 months old...

today.  They grow so fast.  Time flies by.  All those sayings go through my mind and become even more real to me.

I just want time to stand still.  We were talking with some good friends.  3 years ago we could just hang out with them (husband and wife) and it seemed so carefree.  Now a gathering of 4 has become a gathering of 8.  Goodness!  Not as carefree.  We found ourselves talking about "the good ol' days" and it is easy to see how THESE days will be gone just as fast.  But, they will also beome "the good ol' days."  Soon I will just want back the afternoons of laying on the blanket in the backyard with Grace or the fact that my kisses can make boo boos all better.  I will miss the simplicity of life when I could be Evan's nutritional source and not have to pack a million things to feed him somewhere else.  Almost eveyday is a given for family time.  Will there really be days that our children will not want to be with us and prefer their friends?  Hard to think about...all that those days will bring.  I will just try to stay and live in the moments of the present.

Little Evan had his 4 month old dr. apt. today.  He is weighing 16 lbs and 3 oz and 25 in. long.  He has rolled over 3 times now from tummy to back.  He has been having some separation anxiety too...the dr said that was a little advanced but man he gets mad if I walk out of the room.  Kinda funny!  Grace can open door knobs and talks so much!  Her sentences amaze me like "Grace try it" and "Where'd Mommy go?"  She has some how picked up the concept of "mine."  Kids come close to her toys and she declares "mine!"  All part of the development process.  Parenting is the hardest thing I've ever done and the BEST.  Sometimes what is best for them is so hard to do.  Life really is not always about making them happy and those unhappy moments can be even harder for me than them.

Here are pics of Grace and Evan at close to the same age.  What do you think?  Do they look a lot alike?  ~G
